THE

QUIGLEY SHOOTING ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL TEAM STEEL CHALLENGE.

Sunday 15th July saw three teams, the Quigley Shooting Association, the Single Shot Black Powder Cartridge Rifle Club of Great Britain and the Yorkshire Buffalo Hunters compete in the annual Team Steel Challenge competition. Our run of good luck with the weather continued and so, off to the  400 yard firing point where two details of three members from each team fired Stage 1 which consisted of a ten minute ranging-in session at three markers in the backstop, with team members being permitted to spot for each other, followed by the challenging bit, ten shots each in turn at a regulation steel silhouette of a ram backed by a non-scoring Correx sheet to aid the sight picture against the dark sand background. Even so this is a very difficult target and there were misses from all teams. Highest scorers were Steve Bonfield of the SSBPCRCGB and Richard Healey of the YBH each scoring nine hits. Going in for lunch the score stood at 31 for the YBH, 24 for the SSBPCRCGB and 23 for the QSA.

Lunchtime provided the chance for shooters to picnic in the sunshine and exchange hints and tips on doping the wind etc. as well as to sow seeds of friendly rivalry.  (What other sport has opposing teams giving each other tips and assistance?) Out now to 600 yds and a reprise of Stage 1, but this time ten rounds each at a ¾ size steel buffalo silhouette, again with a Correx backing. Once more there were a few misses but the QSA and the SSBPCRCGB tied with 43 hits and the YBH hit the buffalo 36 times.

After the scores had been factored, the SSBPCRCGB and the YBH had each ‘rang the gong’ 67 times with the QSA at 66 times, a very close contest indeed.

As the SSBPCRCGB were only able to field a team of five, in the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play it was decided to allow the other teams to drop one member’s score, this didn’t make any difference to the positions and the result was a win for the SSBPCRCGB with 67, second the YBH with 61 and the QSA with 58 hits.

So the Annual Trophy goes South for another year. All competitors received a commemorative medal. The atmosphere throughout was one of great comradeship and firers are to be congratulated for the truly sportsmanship way in which the competition was run.
