THE ANNUAL QUIGLEY SHOOTING ASSOCIATION TIGHTGROUP SHOOT May 26th 2018.

Run on the lines of UK Benchrest style competition the format generally follows that of Benchrest shooting, but with some minor allowances due to the unique nature of these 19th Century long guns, and, as the only wind indicators on the prairie were grass and dust, no wind flags are permitted. Each firer shoots four separate groups of five rounds at 100 metres on a standard 25yd pistol target with time to wipe the bore between shots. The resulting group sizes recorded are then added together and divided by 4, to give an average group size.

As per Benchrest rules, firers are allowed to rest the rifles front and back if they wished, although not used to this position, some soon got the hang of it. However, as it turned out, probably due to a quite strong crosswind, almost everyone shot at least one group larger than we would have liked.

This year there were very few groups below 2 inches. These were Eric Todd, Richard Healey and Lyndsay Watson, shooting for honours with his original 32-40 Ballard chambered Marlin model 1881 manufactured in 1886.

All competitors were using black powder loads, the results were pretty encouraging and show that firers are getting to grips with the “Dark Stuff”.  Thanks to everyone who entered, we should continue to strive towards achieving smaller groups at this distance; otherwise decent scores at longer ranges will continue to elude us.

RESULTS.
